Power production was 7% lower in the second quarter of this year than in the same period last year due to less water in the reservoirs.

The production of power amounted to 33.4 TWh in the second quarter of 2022, according to Statistics Norway (SSB). That is a decrease of 7.0% from a record high level the year before.

Wind power production has increased sharply in Norway in recent years, but hydropower is still dominant. The decline in total production is, therefore, due to lower hydropower production.

“This can be seen in connection with a lower degree of filling in the reservoirs compared to the same period in 2021,” Statistics Norway explained.

Hydropower accounted for 90.3% of total power production in the second quarter, while thermal and wind power accounted for 1.6 and 8.1%, respectively.
