In more than two out of three murder cases that involve partner killings, violence in the relationship was reported prior to the murder. Now a new action plan aims to prevent violence in close relationships in Norway.

On Friday, the government presents its action plan named “Freedom from violence.”

The plan has 82 measures. Among them, there’s the establishment of a permanent partner homicide commission and a more focus on preventive work.

“Violence in close relationships is a serious crime that ultimately ends with the loss of life. In this action plan, the victims are put at the center. We will protect them better, uncover more cases, and increase the quality of the investigation,” Minister of Justice Monica Mæland (H) noted.

In December last year, the Norwegian Partner Homicide Committee presented its report to the government. The report revealed that in 70% of murder cases where the victim was killed by his partner, violence in the relationship was reported before the murder took place.
