‘Norway supports the unanimous adoption by the UN Security Council today of a resolution to impose tighter measures against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in response to its recent nuclear test and rocket launch,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.
Norway co-sponsored the resolution 2270 (2016) together with a number of other like-minded countries.
Existing UN sanctions and EU restrictive measures have already been incorporated into Norwegian law in the form of separate regulations. Norway will now make the necessary amendments to these regulations following the adoption of the resolution in New York.
The measures adopted are not intended to have adverse humanitarian consequences for the civilian population or undermine the efforts of international organisations to relieve need in the country.
For 20 years, Norway has contributed on a regular basis to humanitarian programmes to assist vulnerable groups in the DPRK through the World Food Programme and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Norway will continue to provide humanitarian aid for these groups.
‘The resolution clearly calls for the resumption of talks. Our message remains the same: Norway urges the DPRK in the strongest possible terms to cooperate with the international community to find solutions that are in accordance with international law,’ said Mr Brende.
