Norway to expand the Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park

Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park in Nordland is being expanded. The government is also establishing a conservation area at Nattmoråga.

The new protection plan comprises eight protected areas, and it is delimited so that it does not prevent power development works in the Outer and Inner Stelåga, the Ministry of Climate and Environment announced.

The protected area will increases by 84.6 square kilometers to a total of 2,862 square kilometers.

“With these changes, we take care of one of the more valuable ecosystems in the region, important for both outdoor life and Sami use,” Minister of Climate and Environment Sveinung Rotevatn (V) noted.

Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park and its surrounding protected area is already one of Norway’s largest protected areas.

It has rich and varied nature, from fjords and mountains to coasts and lush greenery.
