Norway will provide financial support to Ukraine via a British fund so that the country can acquire the weapons it needs.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) announced the news in the Norwegian parliament (Storting) on Wednesday.

Støre said that Norway has already contributed with aid funds, arms deliveries, and by introducing sanctions.

“We have also contributed financially to a fund that the British have created – an ally Norway knows well on the arms side – which can make it possible to secure weapons for Ukraine in the situation they are in now,” Støre said.

Melby referred to the speech that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave to the Storting, in which he asked for support in the form of both money and arms deliveries. The party has previously argued that Norway must support Ukraine with NOK 1 billion in funds for weapons support.

“Norway is not a major arms power, and what we can deliver is limited. But we are relatively an economic superpower that can and should contribute so that Ukraine can procure weapons from elsewhere,” she said.
