The Coast Guard is calling for clearer rules for approaching unidentified drones and threatens to shoot down drones that create dangerous situations.

It is generally forbidden to fly drones over military vessels without special permission, but the Coast Guard lacks procedures for how to handle approaching drones, ship commander Fredrik Synnes told the newspaper Sunnmørsposten.

It is unclear exactly how close to ships drones can fly and what rules apply to photographing the vessels. Synnes has called for clarification after experiencing unknown drones approaching the ship several times.

“In the worst case, drones can be used for sabotage and espionage,” Synnes warned.

He believes there should be a safe distance of 150 meters around the coastguard ship, which is to be regarded as a mobile military area.

“If a drone poses a danger, or if we feel threatened, then we could shoot it down.”
