The Conservatives (H) should have a leading role in a new debate on Norway’s potential EU membership, a majority at the party’s national meeting believes.

With 193 against 99 votes, the majority thus went against party leader Erna Solberg, who has stated that the time has not yet come for an EU debate.

The proposal from Oslo and Vestland Høyre was supported.

“The (current) situation shows how important it is for democracies in Europe to stand together in defense of fundamental values. This has now led to more people calling for a new debate on Norway’s relations with Europe.

“The Conservatives believe that Norwegian EU membership has now become more important than ever and will play a leading role in a new Norwegian EU debate,” the adopted resolution text reads.
