Today, Crown Prince Haakon celebrates his 48th birthday.

The Crown Prince plans to mark the day with a private and limited celebration.

“It will be celebrated privately,” communications manager Guri Varpe at the Palace told NTB.

Last year, the Crown Prince’s family celebrated the birthday in glorious sunny weather on Dvergsøya in Kristiansand, where they often spend their summer holidays.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus were also present.

July 22 anniversary

In the next few days, the Crown Prince and Crown Princess will participate in a number of events in connection with the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack on Utøya and the government quarter in 2011.

The Crown Prince recently described the attack as an “open wound,” which can be difficult to talk about and address.

“It was an attack on the Labor Party, on the AUF, on our state, our society. It was also a national trauma. This is something we, like all other Norwegians, carry with us, as part of our history,” the Crown Prince said.

He joined the rest of the royal family in meeting with several people affected by the attack in recent months.

Outdoor life

Crown Prince Haakon holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California and a master’s degree in development studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

In his spare time, he is a passionate surfer, and he is very interested in music.

“The Crown Prince also likes to ski and is a skilled skier,” the official biography of the royal family states.

He also loves the outdoor life and was recently seen paddling out in the Oslo Fjord with young people under the auspices of Norsk Friluftsliv.

The Crown Prince was born at Rikshospitalet on July 20, 1973, and is the first in line to inherit the Norwegian throne. It will soon be 20 years since he married Crown Princess Mette-Marit in Oslo Cathedral on August 25, 2001.

Later this autumn, the stage is set for another anniversary in the royal family: his big sister Märtha Louise turns 50 on September 22.
