Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (AP) condemned the verdicts against Myanmar’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the country’s president Win Myint.

“I am very concerned about how the military regime seems to be using the judicial system to gag political opponents and how this will affect the already serious situation in Myanmar,” she noted in a statement.

She believes the verdict seems to be an attempt to exclude the leadership of the National League for Democracy (NLD) from the political landscape in Myanmar.

“This is contrary to ASEAN’s five-point plan, which advocates a dialogue process with all parties. This is a plan that has broad international support,” Huitfeldt stated.

“I reiterate the strong appeal for the release of President Win Myint and State Councellor Aung San Suu Kyi, all political prisoners, and others who have been arbitrarily imprisoned since the February 1 coup.”
