Healthcare professionals that are in contact with patients will be offered a third dose of the corona vaccine. At the same time, municipalities with high corona rates are asked to consider introducing local measures.

“The government has decided that health personnel that is in contact with patients will be offered a third dose of vaccine, to secure those who are in the front line and prevent the spread of infection,” Minister of Health Ingvild Kjerkol (AP) said after a meeting with corona-plagued municipalities on Thursday.

According to estimates, just under 200,000 employees in the health service will be offered so-called booster doses in this round. Health personnel who were first in the vaccine queue earlier this year will also be the first to receive the third dose, Kjerkol stated.

“The recommendation can later be extended to include other groups of health personnel. It will, among other things, depend on the infection situation or increased knowledge (on corona),” she noted.

Figures from last week show that close to 80,000 Norwegians have so far received the third dose, which is often referred to as a booster dose.

Norway’s royal couple is among those who already received the third dose – they were vaccinated on Monday.
