“This may be the beginning of a third wave where the mutated and more contagious virus variant will quickly become dominant,” Minister of Health Bent Høie (H) said on Tuesday.

“We have seen this happen in many other countries in Europe, and we know how tough the third wave can be,” Høie said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Infection rates are rising again. We have local outbreaks across the country. This may be the beginning of the third wave.”

In the last 24 hours, 729 cases of infection have been detected in Norway, the highest number of infections in one day since January 7.

Høie also pointed out that there is increasing evidence that the mutated virus increases the risk of more serious illness and more hospital admissions.

Vaccination during the Easter holidays

Norway will receive around 650.000 vaccine doses in March, including a large delivery during the Easter week.

“There will be no Easter holiday when it comes to the vaccination,” Høie added.

“I encourage everyone who has a vaccination appointment to show up, even if it is during the Easter holidays,” he noted.
