Minister of Fisheries and Seafood Odd Emil Ingebrigtsen (H) wants more equality in the male-dominated fishing industry.
In a video meeting on Wednesday, Ingebrigtsen will talk to ten female fishers to get input on a strategy for better equality in the fisheries, which the Norwegian parliament (Storting) has asked the government to prepare.
“There are too few women in the fishing industry. Therefore, I look forward to receiving input on what we can do about this from those who know the situation the best,” Ingebrigtsen said.
Representatives from a number of interest groups and other government agencies will also participate.
Value creation
At the end of 2020, according to the Directorate of Fisheries, there were 360 women and 9,144 men in fishing as their main industry, and 67 women and 1,409 men in fishing as their secondary industry.
“The Norwegian fishing industry is, and always has been, important for value creation along the coast.
“To continue to strengthen its position, it is important that the industry attracts competence from the entire population,” Ingebrigtsen noted.
