The king’s big sister, Princess Astrid, turns 89 on Friday.

Princess Astrid Maud Ingeborg was born in 1932 as the second eldest child of King Olav and Crown Princess Märtha.

She grew up on Skaugum in Asker, but fled with her family when the Germans invaded Norway on April 9, 1940.

The princess has had several assignments over time on behalf of the royal family.

“In her work, Princess Astrid has placed special emphasis on caring for the weak in society and on the inclusion of those who are a little different. The princess enjoys sports and outdoor life and is a faithful guest in Holmenkollen, and at other major sporting events,” the Royal House writes.

The princess is one of the king’s two older sisters. The other sister, Princess Ragnhild, died in 2012.
