The Armed Forces are investing billions of kroner in building up presence at the border areas in Finnmark. The process began the year after Russia annexed Crimea.

Several billion kroner are now being invested in buildings, electronics, weapons, and vehicles, the newspaper Klassekampen writes.

At Porsangmoen and in Sør-Varanger, resource allocations for border guards and a separate company specially trained for invasion defense will be increased. In addition, the Home Guard in Finnmark is being strengthened. The target is to have more than 2,000 trained and well-equipped soldiers.

“My main message is that Finnmark can now be defended,” Colonel Tomas Beck, head of Finnmark Land Defense (FLF), stated.

The year after Russia annexed Crimea, the Norwegian Armed Forces changed course and started advocating a stronger presence, especially in the north, something the Norwegian parliament (Storting) also agreed with, the newspaper writes.

Mayor Aina Borch (AP) in Porsanger says she is pleased with increased military activity and hopes that the population in the Municipality will increase. The Municipality is now building 45 new apartments for the Armed Forces’ employees in the municipal center Lakselv.
