On Saturday, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that a Norwegian citizen had died in an avalanche in Austria.

The Ministry told NTB that the person’s relatives in question have been notified and that they are receiving consular assistance from the Norwegian authorities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not reveal the gender or age of the dead person. There were several avalanche-related accidents in Austria on Friday, and it was reported that four Swedish citizens died.

The Ministry did not reveal whether the Norwegian citizen died in the same avalanche as the Swedes.

Four Swedish men died

The avalanche that hit the Swedish ski tourists happened near the Swiss border in Tyrol.

The Swedish men who died were in their 40s; they were from Svealand and Götaland.

The Swedes were part of a larger group that was visiting the area and were off-piste when the avalanche took place at 1 PM on Friday. At least 31 avalanches were registered in the area on Friday.

A lot of snow

There was a lot of snow in Tyrol in recent days.

Another avalanche, at Sölden, a little further east in the region, also hit five skiers. However, they survived the avalanche.

Sölden is known for hosting the opening race of the World Cup in alpine skiing.
