The Norwegian Data Protection Authority announced it would issue a fee of NOK 100 million to the dating app Grindr for breaching the consent requirements in the GDPR privacy regulation.

“Our preliminary conclusion is that Grindr has disclosed personal information about the users to a number of third parties without a legal basis,” the Data Protection Authority’s director Bjørn Erik Thon noted.

The Authority believes that Grindr needs consent to share this personal information and that the consent collected via the app isn’t valid.

According to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority, the app is location-based and is used mainly by gay and bisexual men, transgender people, and queers.

“We believe that being a Grindr user is a special category of sensitive personal information that should be protected because it says something about the person’s sexual orientation,” the Authority wrote in a press release.

Grindr: Looking forward to dialogue

Grindr has a deadline to submit its comments by February 15.

“We can confirm that we have received the letter from the Norwegian Data Protection Authority. We will now spend time with our legal adviser Eva Jarbekk in the law firm Schjødt to respond to the notice,” Bjørn Richard Johansen in First House, who is the spokesman for Grindr in Norway, noted in a press release.

He states that Grindr continues to improve its privacy practices “in light of European privacy rules changes.”

“Grindr looks forward to entering into a dialogue with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority to ensure good answers and further information related to the notice we have received.
