Norwegian ambassadors around the world reacted strongly to the fact that they have to go to quarantine hotels and believe that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is insinuating that they are falsifying vaccine certificates.

This weekend, all the diplomatic station chiefs in North America sent an email to the Foreign Ministry’s senior official, Tore Hattrem. The topic was the new requirement for quarantine hotels for all officials abroad upon entry into Norway. Until recently, they were treated as an exception, newspaper Dagens Næringsliv (DN) writes.

The signatories are Norway’s ambassadors to the USA and Canada, Anniken Krutnes and Jon Fredriksen, in addition to the head of the UN delegation, Mona Juul, and Consul General Harriet Berg, Hilde Skorpen, and Jo Sletbak.

“As is well known, the new rules upset many at our stations, both because it is unreasonable and a disproportionate burden for loyal and hard-working officials, and because it insinuates that public officials and their families falsify vaccine certificates,” the ambassadors wrote.

Hattrem: New solutions necessary

DN writes that they have been given access to letters with similar messages from the ambassadors in Europe and Asia.

Hattrem says that the new entry restrictions mean that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must find new solutions and admits that the situation has worsened for Norwegian officials stationed abroad.

“It is clear that these changes make it more difficult for our employees and their families to come home to be vaccinated or for other planned trips home. It is useful and important that we get input from our expatriates in this field. We also have a good dialogue with the unions in the case,” he said.
