Russia expert Geir Flikke does not rule out that the invasion of Ukraine would take place independently of diplomatic talks and that Russia could occupy the country.

“There have been signs that something has been going on for a long time. But it is surprising, unpleasant, and cruel that it occurred,” Geir Flikke, professor at UiO and former researcher at NUPI, said on NRK’s Nyhetsmorgen.

On Thursday morning at 5 o’clock, the news agency Interfax reported that Russia had launched military operations against Ukraine. Ukraine’s foreign minister accused Russia of initiating a full-scale war.

Putin’s speech

Flikke pointed out that there were disturbing moments in Putin’s speech a few days ago.

“One can wonder if this has been a decision that has been around for a long time – and which is now being implemented,” he said.

According to Russian authorities, the civilian population in Ukraine is not a target, and the operation is focusing on military targets.

Flikke added that the Russian forces are considered numerically and militarily superior.
