It has become popular to buy plants from abroad, especially online, but the plants can come with “stowaways” who threaten Norwegian plants, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority warns.

“If you buy plants from abroad, you run the risk of (importing) pests and plant diseases that can cause great and irreparable damage,” Line Ruden at the Norwegian Food Safety Authority warned on Monday.

Plants can be infected with diseases without symptoms and only become ill long after they have entered the country. This makes it difficult to detect the pests before they have already spread and are no longer possible to eradicate.

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority emphasizes that there are strict regulations for the import of plants and that people are responsible for acting in accordance with the rules if they buy plants online or bring them to Norway from abroad.
