The conflict between Israel and armed groups in the Gaza Strip could develop into a full-scale war, Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide (H) fears.

“If the situation does not de-escalate quickly, it can quickly get out of control. It can be a very dramatic and serious situation. Something must be done in the next few hours,” Eriksen Søreide told TV 2 on Wednesday morning.

She urged the parties in the conflict to use the next few hours to reduce the conflict.

“This is an extremely high level of conflict, and it will not take much for this to get out of control. If things do not calm down, we may face a full-scale war,” she added.

Emergency meeting

Norway has taken the initiative for a new emergency meeting on the situation in the UN Security Council on Wednesday. It will take place at 3:00 PM Norwegian time.

UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East peace process, the Norwegian diplomat Tor Wennesland, is expected to brief the Council members on the situation. Tuesday night, Wennesland wrote on Twitter that the attacks must be stopped.
