Norwegian government refuses to change electricity support level for farmers

Norway’s Agriculture Minister Sandra Borch (SP) says she understands farmers’ challenges with high electricity costs. Still, she says the ceiling for electricity subsidies will not be raised.

The ceiling on electricity support for agriculture is set at 20,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month.

Vegetable farmers who have to cool and store vegetables could lose large sums of money as electricity prices surge, and farmers have warned that there may be a shortage of vegetables in the shops over the winter as a result of the cap on the scheme.

“An adjustment of the electricity support scheme for agricultural and greenhouse producers is not planned,” Borch wrote in a comment to the newspaper Nationen.

“The government has chosen to prioritize the production costs for the primary producers. Electricity expenditure for packaging and warehouse operations, therefore, falls outside the scope of the electricity subsidy scheme,” Borch explained.
