Minister of Transport Jon-Ivar Nygård (AP) will consider whether the airport at Rygge in Østfold should be reopened before a third runway is built at Gardermoen.

Minister of Transport and Communications Nygård informed the Norwegian parliament (Storting) that the government wants to appoint an independent committee to look at future capacity at Oslo Airport, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reports.

This means, among other things, that it will be assessed whether a third runway should be built there or whether Rygge should be used as a supplementary airport.

The civil air traffic at Moss Airport Rygge was discontinued in 2017. The controversial air passenger tax, which was introduced on all flights from Norwegian airports in 2016, was stated as a reason when Ryanair discontinued all its traffic from Rygge.

Now a Facebook group with 35,000 members is pushing for a reopening of commercial operations at the airport.

In September, the newspaper Moss Avis wrote that Moss Airport Rygge is for sale. Jotunfjell Partners, the airport owner since 2017, is selling both terminal buildings, parking garages, and aircraft parking spaces. The goal is to sell it during the year.
