On Monday evening, 19 municipalities around Oslo will participate in an emergency meeting with Minister of Health Bent Høie (H) after the recent infection developments in Norway’s capital.

Oslo must follow the guidelines on stricter measures so that the infection does not spread to neighboring municipalities, Høie said at a press conference on Monday.

Høie also said he was very worried about the infection situation in the capital.

“I expect the municipality to follow the health authorities’ advice,” he said.

He pointed to Bergen, which put a great deal of work into reversing the infection situation.

“Now it is Oslo that must take on responsibility,” the Minister of Health noted.

Later on Monday, Oslo will make an announcement about new measures in the capital.

The importance of capitals

Experiences from the rest of Europe show that capitals and large cities are driving the spread of the coronavirus, Høie noted.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) and the Norwegian Directorate of Health have been asked by Høie to consider new measures for surrounding municipalities.

A number of municipalities in the Oslo residential and market region will participate in the digital meeting.

In addition to Oslo, this applies to the municipalities of Bærum, Asker, Lillestrøm, Nordre Follo, Lørenskog, Nittedal, Nesodden, Rælingen, Ås, Lier, Frogn, Nes, Vestby, Enebakk, Aurskog-Høland, Lunner, Gjerdrum, Hole, and Gran.
