Norwegian health official: We must expect more corona infection among younger people when we reopen

Assistant director of health Espen Nakstad reckons that there will be an increase in coronavirus infection among young people when society reopens further.

Earlier this spring, Nakstad said that the infection pressure had to fall below 200 daily cases of infection over time before new relief could be implemented. In the last 24 hours, 505 cases have been registered.

Nevertheless, on Friday, the Norwegian government announced it would go through with stage 2 of the reopening plan.

“The lower the infection pressure we have, the less risk there is for new major outbreaks when society reopens, and people have more contact with each other,” Nakstad told NTB.

“I think we will see more infection among younger people in the future, and less among the elderly. As younger adults are also vaccinated, the R-number will probably be pushed down sharply, as we have seen in Israel and the United Kingdom,” Nakstad noted.
