An employee of the Norwegian Music Council is about to be charged after an investigation has revealed that he has embezzled a total of around NOK 4.6 million over 13 years.
“We are, of course, shocked and disappointed that a trusted employee has behaved like this. At the same time, we are relieved that the embezzlement has not targeted grants that benefit the voluntary music life in Norway,” Secretary-General Bjarne Dæhli of the Norwegian Music Council stated in a press release.
The case became known to the management and the board at the end of June this year. The man has now been fired.
The Norwegian Music Council is an interest organization for music life in Norway. They manage and distribute public grants to the voluntary music scene on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.
External investigation
The Music Council has engaged the law firm and auditing firm PwC to conduct an external investigation of the case. The investigation showed that the embezzlement targeted internal operating funds and that the grant funds were not affected.
“When such a public servant commits an offense as in this case, it is important that the organization learns lessons from the case to minimize the risk of similar incidents in the future,” the Music Council’s chairman Bjørgulv Vinje Borgundvaag stated.
The board of the Norwegian Music Council is now evaluating pressing claims both against the person charged in the case and against the auditor in order to cover all or part of the loss the organization has suffered through the embezzlement.
