Norwegian NGO demands end to “Israeli occupation”

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), a humanitarian NGO, welcomes the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas but doesn’t believe that the peace will last.

“Now that the weapons have finally been put down, let us not make the mistake of looking at this calm as normalcy,” Secretary-General Jan Egeland said.

“There is no normality for the 2 million people living under siege in the Gaza Strip, nor for those living under Israeli occupation in the West Bank,” he said.

“If the siege of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip and the occupation of the Palestinians do not end, the death and destruction we have seen in the last ten days will be repeated,” Egeland said.

Dire circumstances

“Leaders in the United States, Europe, the Arab world, and elsewhere must put pressure on Israel and the Palestinians to end this unsustainable injustice,” he said.

At the same time, NRC requests that the ceasefire be respected so that they can reach Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in urgent need of assistance.

“We need immediate, full, and unhindered access to Gaza and the tens of thousands who have now lost their homes and everything they owned.

“We must immediately begin the work of repairing the damage, rebuilding the ruins, and healing the physical and mental scars the besieged inhabitants have once again suffered,” Egeland said.
