Norwegians can now use rapid tests to end infection quarantine on day seven

The Norwegian government will allow rapid antigen tests carried out by health personnel and self-tests to be used to end infection quarantine on day seven if the result is negative.

The government has made the decision based on the recommendation of the Norwegian Directorate of Health and the National Institute of Public Health (FHI), who believe that PCR tests, rapid antigen tests performed by health personnel, and self-tests should be accepted for ending the quarantine.

“The reason for this change is that the requirement for a PCR test to get out of the infection quarantine has led to long result times for such tests, and many then stay in the quarantine longer than necessary,” the government wrote on its website on Tuesday.

The Norwegian Directorate of Health pointed out that self-tests have a larger margin of error than tests taken by health personnel. Still, when taking the pressure on the testing capacity and long result-processing times from laboratories into consideration, the Directorate believes that it is necessary to make this adjustment.

The changes take effect immediately.
