People in Panjshir Valley told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) that the Taliban have killed civilians there. A Taliban commander denied allegations of war crimes.
NRK has been allowed to travel into the Panjshir Valley, the province where the latest opposition to the Taliban in Afghanistan was crushed. The BBC and Human Rights Watch have aired war crimes allegations.
“We strongly condemn this. It is not true. It’s propaganda. There has been a war here. The soldiers who resisted were, of course, killed. They lost many (people), and we lost many (people). But those who surrendered were not killed,” Taliban commander Gul Agha told NRK.
Several ordinary people in the valley did not want to say too much about what it was like to live under Taliban rule. According to NRK, people told the channel that the Taliban killed civilians.
“Yes, they have killed several – among other places, in the Onaba and Qabzan areas. Civilians,” a man said.
