Al-Qaida in North Africa wants the West to bleed and eventually give up the region, says NUPI researcher Morten Boas.
– It’s a long-term battle with the purpose of wearing out the West and the international community, so that they give up. They think that if the international community gives up, these states are so weak that they will fall, says Bøås said.
AQIM, which is al Qaeda’s wing in North Africa, has claimed responsibility for the attack against at least one hotel and a cafe in Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou.
