On average, a nurse can only buy 1–3% of the homes in central Eastern Norway, according to the nurse index from Eiendom Norge.

According to Eiendom Norge, the 2021 nursing index shows that it has never been more expensive to own a home – relative to income. The index measures how large a share of the homes for sale a single nurse can afford to buy.

Eastern Norway, in particular, is problematic, according to Eiendom Norge.

“Nurses could buy only 1 to 3% of the homes in central Eastern Norway in 2021,” analysis and model director Anders Francke Lund in Eiendomsverdi AS noted in a press release.

In comparison, an average nurse could buy 24% of the homes in Trondheim, 29.4% in Stavanger and the surrounding area, and 27.1% of the homes in Bergen.

“Very high house prices can have negative consequences for the development of the economy and the labor supply. It also has a negative effect on the green transition because it contributes to longer trips to work for many people,” Francke-Lund stated.
