NVE: Families in Eastern Norway face increased electricity bills despite electricity subsidies

For an ordinary family in Eastern Norway, the electricity bill increased by NOK 3,900 in the first half of the year, despite an electricity subsidy of almost NOK 10,000, estimates from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) show.

The figures from the NVE include electricity, grid rent, all taxes, and deductions for the state electricity subsidy, the newspaper E24 writes.

They have based the figures on a family with a spot price contract and electricity consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) a year. That is slightly more than the consumption of an average Norwegian household.

The electricity subsidy contributed to the bill being significantly smaller than it could have been. The NVE estimates that the subsidy amounts to NOK 9,400 for the family in the example.

Without it, the electricity bill would have almost doubled from last year to this year. Instead, it increased by 28% in the first half of the year, compared to the same period last year.

So far this year, the state has covered 80% of the average monthly price above 70 øre per kWh. From the end of the month, 90% of this cost will be covered. The support is limited to consumption of 5,000 kWh per month.
