The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) warns that the drought in Southern Norway can affect the water supply. If the dry weather continues, water-saving measures might become necessary.

Little precipitation and high temperatures have resulted in very low groundwater levels and low water levels in lakes and rivers in Eastern and Southern Norway.

That can create challenges for water supply, power production, agriculture, boat traffic, and life in watercourses, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) warned in a press release.

“If the levels start to become critical, it may become relevant for responsible agencies to introduce measures and restrictions,” section manager Hervé Colleuille in the NVE said.

Forecasts from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute show dry weather is also expected in the coming weeks. The situation is unlikely to improve until the second half of May.
