Orderly Brexit important for Norway

The British Government’s draft Brexit agreement is important for Norway said Prime Minister, Erna Solberg of Høyre (H).

“It’s gratifying that the EU and the UK have succeeded in a signed agreement,” said Solberg to NTB news.

She pointed out, however, that some uncertainty remains.

“Among other things, the agreement must be politically reviewed in the EU and by the British Parliament before it can enter into force on the 30th of March next year. This is nevertheless a step towards an orderly Brexit, which is important for Norway” said Solberg.

Solberg indicated that the signing agreement also entails a transitional period until December 2020. Until then, the UK remains subject to the rules and obligations arising from membership in the EU and the EEA.

“We do not want to give notice of any change in the trade with the country. This is important because it provides predictability for all living and working
in or who trade with or in the UK. It gives us better time to establish a good framework for the long-term relationship between Norway and the UK” said the prime minister.

“Norway will use the transition period to negotiate our future relationship with the UK, parallel to the fact that the EU and Britain negotiate their new agreement,” said Solberg.
