The Oslo Emergency Medical Service treated more than 400 people injured in electric scooter accidents in July. The number is close to double from last year.

On average, the emergency department treated 12.9 people who had been injured in electric scooter accidents every day in the past month, preliminary figures from the department show.

There have been a total of 401 injuries, down from 436 in June, but still significantly more than in the same month last year when the number was 214. A large proportion of accidents, over 40%, still occur between 11 PM and 5 AM. And still, over 6% of the injuries are serious.

Chief physician Henrik Siverts at the emergency department told NTB that the proportion of those who come to the emergency room after electric scooter accidents has actually increased slightly in relation to other injuries.

“The electric scooter injuries were up to 7% of all injuries in June and up to 8% in July. So the proportion has actually increased a bit, even though the total number has decreased somewhat,” he said.

“Regulation needed”

He believes the figures show that there is still a need for the regulations that the City Council plans to introduce from September 1, with night rental stops and a maximum of 8,000 electric scooters in the city.

“I had hoped that the media focus and our encouragement might contribute to the users of the scooters being a little more careful, especially at night,” Siverts said.

“The measures that have been taken so far do not seem to have had any effect. The accidents have now reached a stable high level,” he added.

In total, the emergency room has treated 3,359 patients with electric scooter-related injuries in the period from January 2019 to July 2021.
