Oslo’s City Council leader Raymond Johansen (AP) met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj on Friday, together with mayors from several other European cities.

Johansen participated in the meeting as a board member of the Eurocities, a network of large cities in Europe.

The network represents over 200 European cities, and in cooperation with two Ukrainian city and municipal organizations, they have been in Kyiv to sign an agreement on principles for cooperation on the reconstruction of Ukraine after the war.

Zelenskyj posted a statement about the meeting via his official Telegram account.

“I am happy to welcome the Eurocities delegation to Ukraine. We appreciate that you are standing by our side in this difficult time when our country is fighting against the Russian invasion,” he wrote.

“Thank you to European cities for taking in our people who have fled the war. We will also be grateful for help when it comes to restoring housing, infrastructure, and creating conditions for the return of Ukrainians. It is important that the reconstruction starts now, and not after the war,” he wrote.

Mayor Juhana Vartiainen of the Finnish capital, Helsinki, posted a photo of the visit on Twitter.

“Thank you for your time, President Zelenskyj. It is an honor for the European metropolitan network to express our solidarity with your brave country and to be able to discuss cooperation on reconstruction,” he wrote.
