A total of 844 – two out of three – bars and restaurants in Oslo closed their doors in the last two months before the New Year due to a ban on serving alcohol.

“In the period from the alcohol serving ban that was introduced on November 9 until December 31, 2020, a total of 844 bars and restaurants chose to stay closed,” director Gunnhild Hagen in the Business Administration in Oslo municipality wrote in an email to Dagens Næringsliv (DN).

She further stated that there were ten bankruptcies in the industry in the same period.

Scandinavia’s largest bar chain Rekom Group operates 33 venues in Norway and has been hit hard by the ban.

Almost all of the company’s 700 employees in Norway have been laid off.
