The Governor of Svalbard has fined a person who shot and killed a bearded seal outside Svea in June.

“The person does not have a hunting license or a shooting license that is required and consequently no permit to hunt seals on Svalbard,” the Governor wrote in a press release.

In Svalbard, it is legal to hunt bearded seals between February 1 and April 27 and June 5 and November 30.

You must pass the hunter test and show documentation that proves you passed the big game test. The test has to be passed with the same weapon that you plan to hunt with.

“The person has been questioned, has acknowledged the circumstances, and has accepted the fine. The illegal hunt resulted in a fine of NOK 20,000,” Assistant Governor Sølvi Elvedahl noted.
