Pfizer and BioNTech: Our corona vaccine works against the South African virus variant
On Thursday, vaccine manufacturers Pfizer and BioNTech reaffirmed that their vaccine works against the mutated coronavirus variant from South Africa.
“There is no clinical evidence that the South African virus variant circumvents protection from the corona vaccine,” the manufacturers said in a joint statement on Thursday.
They emphasized that work is still being done to provide effective vaccines if new mutations should drastically reduce the effect of the vaccine they have developed.
However, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that although the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech works against the South African variant, its efficacy is weaker than with the common coronavirus.
