Pfizer and BioNTech say their COVID-19 vaccine is also effective against the virus variants that have emerged in the UK and South Africa.

“The small differences that have been discovered in tests that compare the original virus and the newer variants are unlikely to lead to a significant reduction in the vaccine’s effectiveness,” the companies said in a statement.

On January 25, vaccine manufacturer Moderna also announced that – according to a study – their vaccine is effective against both the British and the South African virus mutations.

“We are excited about this new data, which strengthens our confidence that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine will protect against these newly discovered variants,” Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel noted.

Nevertheless, the company is developing a new version of the vaccine that can be used as an enhancer.

“We’re doing it to be in front of the curve if necessary,” Moderna’s Tal Zaks said, according to the New York Times.
