According to Pfizer, a study shows that the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech is effective against the new mutated virus variants first discovered in the UK and South Africa.

The mutation could make the virus more contagious, and there have also been concerns about whether it would make the vaccines less effective, one of Pfizer’s vaccine researchers, Phil Dormitzer, told Reuters.

“We have now tested the vaccine against 16 different mutations, and none of them have any significant effect. That is good news,” Dormitzer said.

Rapid modification possible

“But that does not mean that the 17th mutation won’t affect the vaccine,” he added.

Both Pfizer / BioNTech’s and Moderna’s vaccine can be rapidly modified to adapt to mutations.

Researchers have stated that this could be done in as little as six weeks.
