The soldiers were part of the NATO exercise Cold Response and were out on a training mission when the plane disappeared from the radar.

The reason behind the crash of the V-22 Osprey is not yet known.

The soldiers have been identified as 27-year-old Captain Matthew J. Tomkiewicz of Indiana, 27-year-old Captain Ross A. Reynolds of Massachusetts, 30-year-old Sergeant James W. Speedy of Ohio, and 24-year-old Corporal Jacob M. Moore of Kentucky.
