Belgian police used water cannons and tear gas to empty a park in Brussels where hundreds of young people gathered in violation of corona restrictions.

The so-called Boum 2 protest is a sequel to a park party protest against the corona measures that the police broke up with horses and water cannons last month.

Towards the afternoon of Saturday, more and more people gathered in the Bois de la Cambre park. Fireworks were fired at the police, who were ready to respond.

“We see that health measures are not respected. The operation to clear the area will therefore start,” the police announced on Twitter before police cars and armored vehicles rolled onto the grass.

“I want to be free”

There were few signs of resistance when the party participants withdrew, even though a rubbish bin was set on fire.

“We are here to protect our freedom. Face mask? I no longer use it. I want to be free,” said an 18-year-old from Flanders, while others shouted “freedom, freedom.”

Belgium has been largely shut down since October due to high infection rates. But the vaccination process is speeding up, and the authorities say that outdoor cafes can reopen on May 8.
