On Tuesday, there were demonstrations against high electricity prices in 21 places in Norway. In Oslo, about 500 people showed up, according to the police.

The protesters’ message was clear: electricity prices today are too high. Therefore, they want political control over the power industry and electricity prices.

The main demands of the protests are a halt in power exports when there is little water in the reservoirs, that Norway steps out of the EU energy agency Acer, and that there is a maximum price for electricity for households and predictable prices for business and industry.

Industriaksjonen – an association of more than 50 unions – was behind the demonstrations, together with several local LO teams.

Support from several sides

The protest has also received support from the Socialist Left Party (SV), the Red Party (Rødt), the Norwegian Agrarian Association (Bondelaget), and parts of the Labor Party, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) writes.

Party leaders Bjørnar Moxnes (R) and Audun Lysbakken (SV) were among the speakers during the Oslo protest.

“While the majority in the Norwegian parliament (Storting) has not yet understood it, most people around the country are fully aware of it: The high electricity prices do not come to Norway on the Danish boat. They come via the cables. A maximum price for electricity must be set for all customers in Norway,” Moxnes said during his speech.

Hundreds demonstrated

About 500 people participated in the demonstration in the capital, police estimate. It started with a gathering at Jernbanetorget at 5 PM, before the demonstrators marched in a torchlight procession to Eidsvoll Square in front of the Storting.

“It went very quietly and calmly,” operations manager Line Skott in the Oslo Police District stated.

Demonstrations were also arranged in Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, Kristiansand, Haugesund, Sauda, Stord, Egersund, Fredrikstad, Porsgrunn, Odda, Gjøvik, Raufoss, Verdal, Sortland, Rana, Elverum, Mosjøen, Etne, and Tromsø.
