Italian hunters were stopped in Kristiansand with 2,027 frozen thrushes. Among them, 10 song thrushes and 31 common blackbirds were found. Both are legally protected.

The hunters were stopped in an inter-agency operation on October 29, the police in Agder reports.

Økokrim first received tips from the public about the hunters and notified the Agder Police District and the Customs. The police in Agder reacted quickly and coordinated with the Norwegian Environmental Protection Agency and the Customs in Kristiansand.

“This is a very good example of a successful inter-agency operation. Here, everyone reacted quickly, and we were able to uncover environmental crime and a serious attempt at smuggling. It is not so common that we come across seizures like this. In my 25 years in the Customs Service in Kristiansand, I don’t recall that we had stopped anyone with so many illegally hunted birds before,” customs inspector Per Otto Smithsen stated.

Only one of the three people in the car was registered in the Hunter Register. The three foreign persons who were stopped were each fined NOK 15,000. The fines were accepted by all three.

“We take illegal hunting seriously, and we are very happy that the public tipped Økokrim about the hunting team,” environmental crime lawyer and prosecutor Ole Martin Paulsen stated.
