On Monday, work began on putting the finishing touches on the sand beach next to the Opera in Oslo.

On Monday, a boat started pumping out sand on what will be a 100-meter-long sand beach – right in the center of Oslo. According to the plan, the facility, which will be called Operastranda, will be opened on Christmas Eve, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) writes.

“It is wonderful to create a beach in the middle of the capital. Wonderful in the sense that the transformation is so great, and people are really looking forward to using it.

“It is a nice workplace because people who pass by are happy and cheer us on,” Solveig Elisabeth Skjelbred Torp, the project manager for the work related to the beach, noted.

The sand pumped over the area on Monday, which will settle softly around the bathers’ toes, was taken from Svelvik, where it has been since the last ice age. Another type of sand, from Hønefoss, will be above water.

At the bottom of the Opera, there will be a children’s beach where a jetty will be built to prevent the sand from being washed away. Further out towards the adult beach, there will be rocks both above water and a bit further out.
