Three women have been seriously injured, and a total of 23 people have been taken to the hospital as a result of an explosion in an apartment building in central Gothenburg.

Sahlgrenska University Hospital reports that they have admitted three elderly women who are seriously injured: one in her 60s, one in her 70s, and one in her 80s. In addition, they have admitted a man in his 60s and a woman in her 30s with minor injuries, and another patient whose extent of injuries is unclear.

According to the newspaper Aftonbladet, a total of 23 people have been taken to the hospital. Five of them were so seriously injured that they were transported by ambulance, the rest by bus.

A Swedish Radio reporter says that the explosion may have happened in a sports shop in the area. Police have previously stated that they believe the explosion took place in an apartment.

An SVT Nyheter reporter described a calm atmosphere at the site at half-past seven.

“The fire is not under control, but the building has been evacuated,” the emergency services’ operations manager told the canal.

“A lot of smoke”

“There has been a lot of smoke in the apartments,” Lars Jostelius from the rescue service told TT.

The evacuees gather in a church in the neighborhood. Several police officers are on their way there to collect witness statements. 

It is unclear how many had to be evacuated, but it could be between 100 and 200, according to Swedish media.

Investigation

The emergency services sent at least 17 units to the scene, including twelve ambulances. The explosion took place at 5 o’clock on Tuesday and caused a major fire. Stairwells, the garage, and apartments were filled with smoke.

According to the police, an investigation has been initiated into the explosion, and the extent of the damage is unclear.

An Expressen reporter stated that the area is close to several university buildings in Gothenburg and close to where public transport passes.
