A young man was found dead at Stortorvet in Fredrikstad on Monday morning. The death is characterized as suspicious.
Crime scene investigators have completed their on-site investigations.
“They have also examined the deceased, and the preliminary conclusion is that there are no external signs of violence that have led to death. The deceased will be autopsied,” task leader Stig Øvergaard told news bureau NTB.
The man has been identified, and work is now being done to notify his relatives, police lawyer Thea Sletto Øverseth in the Eastern Police District stated.
The deceased was found at Stortorvet by passers-by at 7 AM on Monday.
Police consider the death suspicious and have launched an investigation.
“A young man was found dead on Monday morning. We do not know much more than that right now, but since there is no obvious cause of death, we consider the death suspicious,” Geir Willadsen told newspaper Fredriksstad Blad.
The deceased person is a man in his mid-20s, task leader Stig Øvergaard told the newspaper. He is known to the local police from before.
“Passers-by found him in a sitting position outside a restaurant at Stortorvet. The police moved to the site, and it was quickly concluded that the man was dead. It is unknown how long he has been there,” Øvergaard told Fredriksstad Blad.
Area cordoned off
Forensic scientists have secured the site.
“This case is under investigation. We will handle the case in the usual way. Beyond this, we do not want to comment on the case for the sake of the investigation,” Øverseth told NTB.
Pictures from the scene show several police officers. Furthermore, forensic technicians have set up a tent.
Police have cordoned off large parts of the square. They are now working on questioning possible witnesses and securing video from surveillance cameras at Stortorvet, according to Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).
