This fall, about 120 tonnes of pine cones have been harvested, after what is referred to as the best pine cone year in recent times. It can provide more than 500 million new forest plants

-“An unusually warm and dry summer in 2018 makes 2019 the best pine cone year in recent times. The spruce trees reacted to the hot and dry summer last year by forming extra buds with pine cones,” says senior adviser Øystein Meland Edvardsen in the Forest Seed to the Nation.

An extensive harvesting of cones was therefore initiated, which will secure enough seeds for forest plant production for a long time to come.

Edvardsen says that this year the Forest Seed Expect to get around 6,600 sacks of spruce cones, which can yield up to 3,720 kilos of seeds.

The vast majority of this year’s cones, 97 percent, are collected from the Forest Seed Plantations. In addition, it is also slightly lowere in Western Norway in selected quality stocks and in medium to higher altitudes in Eastern Norway.
