Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) has invited US Vice President Kamala Harris to Norway. She also invited American forces to have more military exercises in the country.

On Tuesday afternoon, Solberg had a telephone call with the American vice president.

“We talked, among other things, about Norway having a lot to offer when it comes to zero-emission solutions, and therefore I invited her to come to Norway and have a look when the world opens up again. We will see when they get the time,” Solberg told news bureau NTB.

She is happy that the United States is now part of the Paris Agreement again and that climate is high on the agenda of the new administration.

Different tone

Apart from that, the two talked about women and education, the Arctic, and security policy, among other things.

“There seem to be slightly different tones than during the previous administration when it comes to international organizations and multilateral cooperation,” Solberg said, emphasizeing that Norway also had a good relationship with the US on security policy issues under Trump.

Solberg said they didn’t talk about Trump.

US forces

On Tuesday, the US chargé d’affaires in Norway Richard Riley and Norway’s Chief of Defense Eirik Kristoffersen also met in Ørland, where US forces are deployed.

According to Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK), Riley said that the Americans want to have more exercises in Norway.

American forces’ exercises and training in Norway also became a topic in the conversation between Solberg and Harris.

“It is very good that they have more exercises in Norway. This is in line with the strategy – that one has more people in training for a slightly shorter time, but fewer people on average over other periods. It is in our security interest to have soldiers from other countries training under Norwegian conditions,” Solberg said.

“The Russians know that this has been Norway’s strategy for many years and will remain so in the future.

The Russians are also doing more training and activities.

Riley is currently the head at the US Embassy in Norway because there is no ambassador.

Solberg was not informed of any new ambassadors appointed by the new administration.
