Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (AP) has been invited to a meeting of European heads of state in Prague on the same day the new Norwegian state budget is to be presented.

“Norway has received an invitation, and we will consider how the government can be represented at this meeting,” communications manager Anne Kristin Hjukse at the Prime Minister’s Office told the newspaper Dagens Næringsliv.

Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum (SP) will be the key person on budget day. Still, it is tradition for all government members to participate.

The Liberal Party (V) believes Støre should prioritize the summit in light of the serious situation Europe is in.

“If he is worried about receiving criticism in the Norwegian parliament (Storting) for that, then we will give him full cover to participate in the summit.

“If the summit is as important as it seems, with the participation of heads of government from all over Europe, it will be weird if the Norwegian head of government does not participate,” fiscal policy spokesperson and deputy leader of the Liberal Party, Sveinung Rotevatn, told DN.
